Maui County Planning Update - Fall 2020
Community Plan Updates
By Jennifer Maydan and Kate Blystone, Maui County Planning Department Long Range Division
The Maui Planning Commission concluded their review of the Community Plan Advisory Committee’s Draft West Maui Community Plan. In the New Year, the Planning Department will transmit the revised Draft Plan to the County Council for review and adoption by ordinance.
The South Maui Community Plan project website was launched in October, kicking off public engagement with an online open house. We have already launched a second public engagement activity featuring a story map to help the community see South Maui in a different way. We are getting a great response to our online activities as more and more people share the project with their friends and ʻohana.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prepared to do all our public engagement online for this update. We do hope that with the promise of a vaccine combined with leadership at the state and local level, we will be able to meet in person, safely, before we start the Community Plan Advisory Committee phase of the update later in 2021. Even when in-person meetings become possible, we will continue to provide online public engagement and virtual public meetings to allow everyone to participate in this very important update.
Vision Zero
By Lauren Armstrong, Executive Director Maui MPO
The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is leading a Vision Zero Action Plan to make Maui's roads safer for people walking, biking, driving, and riding the bus. On November 25, Vision Zero helped the Maui Police Department promote the annual Hannah Brown memorial DUI checkpoint event as a targeted enforcement and messaging campaign against driving under the influence. Maui has seen a 73% decrease in fatalities compared to this date in 2019. The only acceptable number of traffic fatalities is ZERO. Under the comprehensive approach of Vision Zero, safe infrastructure like raised crosswalks, bulb outs and roundabouts are also critical to saving lives. The Maui County Department of Public Works is working with the Maui County Planning Department; Maui MPO; and the Healthy Eating, Active Living Coalition to plan a Quick Build Complete Street project on Papa Avenue in March 2021.
