Student Scholarship
Each year, APA-HI
recognizes students of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning for
their achievement of high grades and superior performance in specific
projects and assignments. A faculty committee decides on the basis of
superior GPA, service and project completion. Award numbers vary
according to APAHI funding but typically two students are awarded each
year.
This scholarship program is made possible by the generous donations of planning firms and people like you! “Mahalo to the APA Hawai‘iChapter for supporting my urban planning graduate studies. Because of your support, I was able to continue my research on urban resilience and present my paper at an international conference. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the UH DURP ‘ohana where in addition to learning the technical skills we need as planners, we learn these skills in a place-based, culturally-sensitiv e way. Keep up the great work in supporting our future planners!”
–Layla Kilolu, 2019 Scholarship Recipient
“I would like to thank the chapter for their support and involvement with DURP students. Moving from Washington State to Hawai‘i could have been stressful, but the chapter was welcoming. The willingness to support DURP students through the scholarship and involvement is what makes studying planning at the University of Hawai‘i so special. The incredible kindness of the chapter's members allowed me to continue my degree. Thank you so the support. I would not be where I am today, without the support of APA Hawai‘i.”
-Erin “Bear” Braich, 2018 Scholarship Recipient
“Huge thank you to the chapter for the blessing and honor last year of the annual Student Scholarship! Both DURP and the APA-HI network have gone above and beyond in creating a community for planning students in Hawai‘i. My first year at DURP was extremely challenging both academically and personally, being many years out from undergrad and many miles away from home. This award helped sustain me financially through my second year of studies, and also gave me a sense of place and belonging which shaped the way I approach my coursework, my community, and my goals for the future. Thank you again for your vital support!”
